 Girls
Motor City looked like it would make it a sweep of the sprint medley championships. They had a solid lead with 3 laps to go in the girls’ race. But all that evaporated under challenges by Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City Tx), Pope John XXIII (Sparta NJ) and finally by Benjamin Cardozo (Queens NY).

Dalilah Muhammad, Cardozo’s all-everything junior (she hurdles and high jumps), ran a 2:10.7 anchor to give her school a 2-second win over Pope John, 4:01.30-4:03.69. Emily Carrollo, a sophomore, ran a withering 2:12.5 anchor for Pope John, but she couldn’t catch Muhammad.

Motor City faded to 3rd in 4:05.11, Marshall to 4:08.93. Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn) broke into the medals with a fine 4:07.16 win in Heat II.

Boys

The three fastest seeds lined up together in Heat I – Motor City, aka Mumford of Detroit; Warren Central, of Indianapolis, and Notre Dame, of Lawrenceville, N.J. Each of course had a big-time anchor, the essential part of a winning SMR.

D’Juan Richardson gave Warren Central the lead after the opening 200, but Cedric Everson of Motor City passed Brad Ellington on the 400 leg to put MC in front. Now Isaiah Ward, Motor City’s junior anchor, was being pursued by two of the best halfmilers in the country, Gibi Gibilisco of ND and De’Sean Turner of Warren Central. Gibilisco has run 1:53, and Turner ran a 4:08 1,600 outdoors last spring.

First Gibilisco challenged for the lead. Turner fell back, then began his own long pursuit, passing Gibilisco as Ward pressed on, and at the end Turner’s 1:52.0 was not enough. Motor City ran 3:26.48, 5th-fastest ever and .16 ahead of Warren. Warren Central ran 3:26.64, 7th-fastest ever, and Notre Dame finished in 3:28.59.

Shehendehowa won Heat II in a good 3:31.06, holding off Iona Prep (3:31.52).
