Girls
New Rochelle (NY), the heavy favorite going in, won in 33.93. The team was Assata Cowart, Lacresha Simpson, Tameekia Cooper and Elizabeth Mott.
Unfortunately, the best teams did not run head-to-head. The event was run in timed sections.
Ridgewood (NJ), running in Heat III, ran 34.14 to finish 2nd. New Rochelle won Heat II. Ocean Township (NJ) was 2nd to Ridgewood in III in 35.25, and Randolph Township (NJ) won heat I in 35.32.
The race was run over 5 hurdles.
Boys
South Shore (Brooklyn, NY) won Heat I in 29.85, and it held up for the win. Although records are difficult to determine in this event, SS will be credited with a New York state record. The race was run over 4 hurdles.
The team was Sean Troop, Brian Broadbelt, Kemar Clarke and Rolston Braithwaite. Clarke, the star of the team, is a senior who was born in Jamaica. Broadbelt, a senior, also is Jamaican. Braithwaite is a sophomore from Guyana. Troop, city champion in the 600, is a senior who was born in Colorado but has lived in the Cayman Islands.
Heat II went to Abraham Clark (Roselle, NJ) in 30.17 in a close race with Fordham Prep (Bronx, NY), 2nd in 30.22. Fordham Prep used Chris Palicka, Mike McCabe, Mohamed Kanu and Brian Andreycak.
Fordham Prep will be credited with a new national Catholic record, and of course CHSAA record.
Larry Byrne of Rhode Island, the keeper of the New York and the Catholic records, was caught by cell phone in his car heading south. “Yes, Fordham Prep gets the Catholic record, sure.” And South Shore? “Yes again, a new New York state record!”
All-time U.S., there are two faster autotimed performances, 29.45 by West Side (Anderson, SC) and 29.74 by Winslow Township (NJ), both in 2004. There are also several fast hand-timed performances at 4x60y, including the 29.0 by Metuchen (NJ) 35 years ago.
