BOYS
Charles White had begun the school year at Garden City (LI, NY), but for the second time this winter he flew in from his new home, in Littleton, Colo., to run at the Armory. His withering kick was no match for this field.
De’Sean Turner of Indiana and Kevin Gill of Massachusetts took turns with the early pacesetting, a slow 2:11 880. At ¾ White took off and ran a pro-level 58.5 last 440 to win easily in 4:14.23. Chris Williams (Collegiate, NYC) got up for 2nd, 4:17.84.
GIRLS
Caroline King (Scotia-Glenville, NY), the NY state 1,000 champion, took the pace and kept it honest, 2:25 at the half, 3:41 at 1320, with Callie Hogan (Bay Shore, LI) on her shoulder, but no one was dropping off. New Englanders Jeanne Mack (LaSalle, RI) and Bridget Dahlberg of Massachusetts were next, and with a lap to go Kaitlin Shiver of Florida moved into contention. Brittany Sheffey (Bellport, Brookhaven NY) was trying to catch up, alongside Suejin Ahn (Ward-Melville, Setauket NY), but the race was getting away from them as the pace picked up.
Hogan pounced with 150 to go, arms pumping, and seemed to have the race won, but King, who had burst past Sheffey at their state meet, wasn’t finished and she swung wide and appeared to briefly get in front in a furious battle down the straightaway. Hogan never gave in, and at the tape she was just barely in front, and pumped her fist as she crossed the line. Hogan won it 4:50.35-4:50.45.
Shiver came up for 3rd (4:51.53), followed by Dahlberg (4:51.75), Ahn (4:52.89) and the surprising Kimberly Standridge, of Randolph, N.J., who ran 4:53.18. Standridge had been moved up to the seeded section when a lane opened, and broke 5 minutes for the first time.
