March Comes in Like a Lion
by Mike Rauh

The New Balance Track & Field Center is the famed home of record-setting marks for athletes of all ages.  In the 2007 season we’ve seen records fall at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic, the Coca Cola High School Hall of Fame Classic, the Bishop Loughlin Games and other huge meets in this arena.  On March 9, 10, and 11th the Armory will feature high school athletes from around the US, Canada, and Bermuda.  In all, there will be competitors from at least 32 states who will unleash their potential in three days of challenging track and field events.  Meet co-director Adam Sanford told me, “this is a weekend of infinite possibilities.”

5,000 meters
GIRLS
It's a tough meet record, because Brianna Jackucewicz (Colts Neck, NJ) set the national record when she ran 16:43.02 3 years ago. Can anyone in this year's field break 17 minutes? (Cassie Hintz of Old Town, Maine, did so last year.) This year's leading contenders include Megan Bartlett (Sandpoint, Idaho), Elizabeth Briasco (Forest Hills, Queens), Shelby Greany (Suffern, NY), Ruth-Anne Hadjis (Hattiesburg, Miss), Kari Johnson (Central Lake, Mich) and Caroline Schultz (Hilton, NY). Briasco, a ninth-grader at Queens Science, was runner up in the Simplot 3200 last month in Idaho. Greany, a sophomore who was a mainstay of Suffern's powerhouse relay squads in 2006, finished 19th in the Foot Locker cross-country in California in December. Schultz was 31st in that race. A week earlier, Schultz helped Hilton to 2nd place at the Nike Team Nationals cross country in Portland, Ore.
